The Top 6 Stressors for Pedigree Cat Breeders (And How to Stay Sane Through It All)

Breeding cats is an emotional roller coaster. You’ll experience a mix of highs, as well as lows. After all, we’re working with animals and they’re quite unpredictable. As breeders, we set high expectations and then get disappointed when things don’t go as planned.

When stress is high, you may feel like throwing in the towel. You’ll feel like you’ve failed your cats, your cattery is a train wreck, and you’re a terrible breeder. In most cases, none of this is true. These emotions come from the influence of your peers, putting pressure on you to never make mistakes or face challenges.

One of the most important ideas that you can adopt is NEVER MAKE decisions when you’re under emotional distress. Always give it a few days (or weeks) to pass and then reassess the situation. Because whatever is going on, it will pass.

In this article, we’ll do some real-talk about some of the biggest issues that cause stress and frustration for cat breeders, and how to overcome them.

1. Kitten Losses (Neonatal Death, Fading Kitten Syndrome)

I’ll never forget my first kitten loss. It was the very first kitten ever born in my cattery. It was born tail first (which I now know is quite common) and it was in the birth canal for too long. When this happens, you question if there is something that you could’ve done to prevent the loss.

As more litters and kittens are born, you’ll realize that losing kittens is just part of being a breeder. Whether it’s stillborn kittens, kittens that pass within a few days the loss of a kitten is never easy. Some causes of death are preventable, while others aren’t. If you aren’t sure how to differentiate, then having a mentor is a great way to work things out.

Sharing stories of your loss with trusted breeders is a great way to get support. We’ve all experienced the loss of kittens and can empathize with you. Becoming a member of Sensei Collective is your first step in finding a community that you can vibe with.

2. Buyer Drama or Difficult Clients

Every kitten will eventually go home with a new owner. Sometimes your buyers will turn out to be bad apples! You could end up dealing with irate buyers, chargebacks, buyer that ghost you and even lawsuits.

I know it sounds crazy, but the wrong people can have unrealistic expectations. The emotional labor of trying to please everyone is daunting. With too many of the wrong people, it can force thoughts of hanging up your breeder hat.

Choosing the right buyers has never been so important. When you create an application process that is followed by a strict pre-screening process, your job becomes so much easier.

The Cat Breeder Blueprint Course from Cat Breeder Sensei walks you step-by-step through a process that will tighten up ANY cattery business and turn it into a stress-free machine. This course and many others are available instantly when you become a member of Sensei Collective.

3. Health Scares in the Cattery

If health scares aren’t one of the highest levels of stress, then I don’t know what is. They give no warning and come in like a hurricane. One day, everyone is fine, and then all of a sudden, your cats are sneezing or have diarrhea. You start questioning everything.

  • “Did I bring something on my shoes” ?
  • “Did they pick something up at the vet” ?
  • “Does my protocol have holes in it” ?

No matter how clean your cattery is, or how careful you are, stuff still happens. Just like losing kittens, every breeder will experience a viral or bacterial outbreak. EVEN THE ONES THAT PRETEND THEY DON’T.

If this happens to you, don’t panic. This is a good time to jump into a rabbit hole and do some research. We have a great article on Dealing with Cattery Pathogens to help you begin your quest. View it as a learning opportunity. It’s not the end of the world, although it may feel like it is.

4. Social Media Pressure, Criticism and Drama

Social media can be straight-up exhausting. Now add the fact that you’re a cat breeder on top of that and it’s a recipe for stress.

The cat hags are sitting in the shadows just waiting to strike with judgment, passive-aggressive comments, or gaslighting. Then there are the breeders who literally copy your captions, your graphics, and your video content. The scammers don’t help matters much either. Oh! and honorable mention to the “adopt don’t shop” crowd.

You didn’t sign up to be a cat breeder to be liked—you signed up to raise badass cats. So post with purpose, block the chaos, and protect your peace. Find your people, stay in your lane, and let your work speak louder than their drama.

5. Financial Strain

I’m certain that by now you’ve seen the posts where breeders are complaining to the pubic how much it costs to raise kittens. They’re not wrong. It’s very expensive to run a cattery. Not only with the day-to-day cost of basic necessities, but also the unexpected expense of emergency vet bills, which are inevitable.

Before you commit to owning 4 -6 breeding cats, be sure that you have cash reserves. You should be able to cover the basics for at least 18 months as well as an emergency fund.

Breeding cats is a real business and should be run like one. When you embrace this concept, you’ll start to apply techniques that will not only improve the success of your cattery but reduce the stress on yourself.

At Cat Breeder Sensei, we believe in working smarter, not harder.

6. Balancing Breeding With Life

Breeding will take over every corner of your life if you let it. I’m not even kidding. It starts with late-night bottle feedings and vet runs squeezed into your lunch break, and suddenly you’re canceling dinner plans because somebody’s in heat or about to pop. Your house turns into a baby zoo, your phone’s blowing up with inquiries, and your brain is constantly running—Did I clean that litter box? Is that kitten gaining weight? Did I respond to that buyer?

And let’s not forget the family part. Your partner might be over it, your kids are stepping in cat puke, and you haven’t had a real day off in months. It’s hard. Because this is a lifestyle, not just a job.

Here’s the secret: You’ve gotta protect your time just like you protect your cats. Schedule days off. Take a breather between litters. Set business hours—and stick to them. Automate what you can, and don’t be afraid to say no. You’re allowed to have a life outside of the cattery. In fact, you need it—to stay sane, focused, and genuinely happy doing what you love.
